California is going through a drought that many think is the driest period in history.  But scientists are worried that “megadroughts” could come again.  Using studies of tree rings, sediment and other natural evidence, researchers know that California has experienced many spells of droughts lasting 10-20 years over the last 1,000 years.  There was a 240 year drought that started in 850!

California received less rain in 2013 that in any year since it became a state in 1850.   The current rainfall season is on track to be the driest since 1580.
