Megadrought

Megadrought

California is going through a drought that many think is the driest period in history.  But scientists are worried that “megadroughts” could come again.  Using studies of tree rings, sediment and other natural evidence, researchers know that California has experienced many spells of droughts lasting 10-20 years over the last 1,000 years.  There was a 240 year drought that started in 850! California received less rain in 2013 that in any year since it became a state in 1850.   The current rainfall season is on track to be the driest since 1580. A megadrought could have many catastrophic effects.  Farmers would bear the brunt of the effect.  They use 80% of the water!  To read more check out this article. What is a Typhoon?

What is a Typhoon?

Nov 08

What’s the difference between a typhoon and hurricane and cyclone?  The only difference is where these storms occur.  In the Atlantic and Northeast Pacific, they are called “hurricanes”.    The same storm in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean is called a typhoon.             The ingredients include a pre-existing weather disturbance, warm tropical oceans, moisture, and relatively light winds. If the right conditions last long enough, they can combine to produce the violent winds, incredible waves, torrential rains, and floods we associate with typhoons, hurricanes and cyclones. Super Typhoon Haiyan is a massive typhoon packing winds approaching 200 mph and called one of the most powerful storms ever recorded blasted into the Philippines on Friday.  It killed at least two people. Forecasters warned of huge catastrophic damage. Trees were down, power was out in parts of the country, there was widespread flooding and communication with the hardest-hit areas was knocked out....
