Earth’s Twin from Hell!

Kepler-78b is a planet 400 light years away.  However it is Earth’s hellish twin!  Astronomers describe it as the first Earth sized planet made of the same rock and iron as Earth.  It also orbits a star similar to our sun.

But we won’t want to be visiting Kepler-78b anytime soon!  Kepler-78b whirls around its parent star in 8 1/2 hours!  Remember Earth orbits the sun in 365 days!  At that proximity, it’s a hellishly hot place to be.  Scientists estimate that its 3,500-5,000 degrees F.  At that temperature, rock will melt!

Kepler-78b’s mass is estimated at 1.69 times that of Earth.

Astronomers feel that this discover is an “encouraging sign” in the search for new  habitable worlds beyond our Solar System.

Astronomers using the Kepler telescope said the Milky Way contained at least 17 billion planets the size of Earth, and likely many more.
